Brian Milder is the Senior Vice President for Strategy, Advisory & Innovation at Root Capital, a mission-driven financial institution with $130 million in capital under management that provides credit and capacity building for agricultural businesses aggregating small-scale farmers in Africa, Latin America, and Indonesia. He leads Root Capital’s Advisory Services and Strategy, Knowledge & Innovation teams and serves on the organization's Executive Team. The Advisory Services team delivers financial training to prepare agricultural businesses to apply for loans and strengthens their capacity to manage loans. The Strategy, Knowledge & Innovation team conducts research & development on new products and services, social & environmental impact assessment, and field building related to smallholder agricultural finance, sustainable supply chains, impact investing, and small and growing businesses. He also serves as the coordinator for the Council on Smallholder Agricultural Finance (CSAF), a group of leading social lenders developing standards and best practices for the agricultural finance sector, and on the steering committee for the Initiative on Smallholder Finance.
Prior to joining Root Capital in 2007, he worked as Boston site director for Health Leads. He was also an entrepreneur-in-residence based in Santiago, Chile for the Nonprofit Enterprise and Self-sustainability Team (NESsT), which operates venture funds to incubate sustainable social enterprises in Latin America and Central Europe. He holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a B.A. in social studies from Harvard College.
