Biography

Juergen Voegele, Ph. D., was appointed Director of the Agriculture and Environmental Services Department (AES) of the World Bank on October 1, 2012. He leads the department in pioneering a landscape approach to sustainable development and the alignment of agriculture and environmental practices. In this role he provides leadership to the Bank’s activities across sustainable landscapes and oceanscapes, agriculture and environmental economic policy, and risk management and markets. Dr. Voegele is also the Chair of the Agriculture and Rural Development Sector Board, as well as the Environment Sector Board. Since joining the World Bank in 1991, Dr. Voegele has held a number of assignments, leading the Agriculture Unit in China and the Agriculture and Rural Development Unit of the Europe and Central Asia Region. In 2008, Dr. Voegele was appointed Director of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of the World Bank and oversaw global programs for rural poverty alleviation, and agriculture and natural resources management.
